John W. Walter Jr.

John W. Walter (BSJ69) was a member of the inaugural class of the Medill Hall of Achievement in 1997.

Walter was managing editor and executive editor The Atlanta-Journal Constitution from 1989-2002. During that time he oversaw coverage of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Prior to joining the Journal-Constitution, Walter was a founding editor and senior editor at USA Today; a feature editor and writer at the Washington Star; assistant managing editor at The Baltimore News-American; and managing editor at two Gannett dailies.

He was the editor and publisher of the Vineyard Gazette from 2003 to 2004. In 2005, he and his wife established Vineyard Stories, a publishing company that publishes books about and by people from Martha's Vineyard.

Walter died in 2008.
