Richard N. Ostling

Richard N. Ostling (MSJ63) is Senior Correspondent for Time, specializing in religion. During the 27 years with the weekly newsmagazine, he has written 22 cover stories and reported for 16 others, most recently "The Search for Jesus" (April 8 '96). He has traveled to Africa, Israel, Vatican City, other parts of Europe, and locales across North America to interview important religious newsmakers and ordinary believers. He also broadcasts "Report on Religion," which is syndicated nationwide twice a week by CBS Radio and does regular religion reports for public television's The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

Born in Endicott, New York, on July 14, 1940, Ostling is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan, where he was a senior editor of The Michigan Daily. He earned an M.A. in religion from The George Washington University, and also holds an honorary Litt. D. from Gordon College. Before coming to Time, he worked for the Morning News and Evening Journal, in Wilmington, Del., and as news editor of hristianity Today, a Protestant magazine then based in Washington, D.C.

Richard Ostling is married to Joan K. Ostling who is an assistant professor of English and journalism at Nyack College. They have two children and live in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
