Tom Philp

Following his graduation from Medill, Tom Philp (BSJ83) joined the San Jose Mercury News, where he was a reporter for nine years. In 1992 Philp joined The Sacramento Bee as a staff writer and reporter, becoming associate editor and editorial board member in 1997.

In 2005, while writing for The Sacramento Bee, Philp won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing. The award was granted for a series of editorials he wrote about reclaiming the flooded Hetch Hetchy Valley in California’s Yosemite National Park. Philp’s work required extensive research of the valley.
