Associate Professor Patti Wolter joined the Medill faculty in the spring of 2002 after 12 years of senior staff magazine jobs in New York, San Francisco and Chicago, including the managing editor and acting editor positions at Mother Jones magazine and the senior features editor position at Self magazine, where she managed award-winning and investigative content on women’s health. She also spent five years as the managing editor and editor in chief of The Neighborhood Works, a public affairs-advocacy magazine on urban issues. Today she serves as an editorial consultant for print and online publications. Her freelance writing has appeared in a range of publications, including Self magazine on women’s health and nutrition issues. Her work at Medill has remained focused on the magazine industry, with specialties in magazine editing, factchecking, health and science writing, and multiplatform publishing. In particular, she has been interested in narrative structure and storytelling across platforms, as well as in teaching science writing to both journalists and scientists. In her science writing courses, she regularly partners with consumer science writing outlets, such as Popular Science magazine. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Medill; her master's degree was earned with highest distinction.
