Sarahmaria Gomez is a multimedia freelance journalist based in Chicago. She is co-owner of Tu Multimedia, an organization that specializes in Internet storytelling through audio, video and photography. Her clients range from grassroots community development groups like newcommunities.org to large organizations like the MacArthur Foundation. Before establishing her own organization, Gomez was a reporter at WGEM-TV in Quincy, Ill., and an electronic news journalist at the Chicago Tribune. Gomez is originally from Santa Fe, N.M., and is a journalism graduate of Medill.
Gomez currently runs Media Teens Chicago, a collaboration between Northwestern University’s Medill School and the Gary Comer Youth Center. The program gives high school students the tools they need to become smart news producers and consumers. Through experimenting with video, audio, photography and website production, as well as meeting professionals in the fields of journalism and communications, students not only gain skills to help them analyze the news they read every day, they learn technical skills to help them become better candidates for jobs or college admissions. The Medill undergraduates who mentor these students will gain valuable teaching and leadership experience and further strengthen our ties to the Chicago community.
