Susan Mango Curtis is an educator, designer and consultant. Before coming to Medill, she worked as an assistant managing editor for the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal, where in 1991 she spearheaded a complete redesign. Three years later, she was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize gold medal for a series titled "The Question of Color." In 1996 she received the Garth C. Reeve chair in journalism and took a sabbatical to teach visual journalism at Florida A&M University.
Prior to joining the Beacon Journal staff, Curtis was a page designer at the Journal newspapers in suburban Washington, D.C., where she designed TMC publications. She also has worked as a staff artist for the Washington Post Sunday magazine and as art director for the National Rifle Association, where she designed American Marksman magazine and the newspaper, Reports from Washington, in addition to various promotional materials. Curtis operates a design consulting business that caters to publications and organizations both in the United States and abroad, and frequently lectures on newspaper design for various universities and newspaper societies. She is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists Visual Task Force and a past president for the Society for News Design.
To prepare students for a visually stimulated audience that demands storytelling with visual impact. My classes are designed to provide students with the knowledge needed to successfully design publications of the future with a focus on the audience at all times. Most importantly, the students leave the class confident in their design skills.

1996 - Society of Newspaper Design: staff won two awards of excellence Society of Newspaper Design: I won one award of excellence for the design of Tribe sport section. The Beacon Journal Art Department staff received two certificates of distinction and one gold medal for design and illustration from creativity '96.
1995 - Associated Press Society division IV informational graphics The Beacon Journal art department staff received one first prize and two honorable mentions. In Illustration the Beacon Journal won one first prize. The Beacon Journal art department.staff received four awards of excellence from SND National Headliner award, first place in Illustration went to one of my staff members
1994 - The Pulitzer Prize gold medal for public service: "A Question of Color"--The Akron Beacon Journal's year of reporting on race relations- led to "Coming Together," the community's project that continues today. The project required a diverse staff to report in each of the five, multi part series, to understand what it has found and to write for others in a voice that will be heard. Twenty-nine Beacon Journal reporters, photographers, artists and editors, black and white, from every newsroom department connected with readers from every part of Akron.
