ABOUT US
In June of 1998, CNN Senior Political Analyst Gloria Borger spent an afternoon on Northwestern’s campus to address the graduating Medill students as their commencement speaker. After approximately half-an-hour wrapping these incipient journalists in the sage wisdom she had acquired throughout her venerable career, she concluded, as many graduation speakers do, with a word of advice: “Remember,” she boomed into the microphone, “as you go out into the world of journalism, seeking jobs or trailblazing for your profession, that it’s not what you know …” She paused, waiting for the audience to mentally fill in the remainder of the cliché, then surprised them with a joke that tickled the Medill students, who were, of course, well trained in grammar and editing. “It’s WHOM you know.”
Those words resonate particularly acutely now, as journalists across the nation struggle to define themselves in the midst of a confusing media terrain and a shifting economic foundation. In response, Medill alumni in Philadelphia created a club for the school’s graduates to provide networking opportunities, career advice and even a little bit of fun. The Medill Club of Philadelphia will work together with the NU Club of Philadelphia (which won the university’s “Best Programming” award in 2009 and “Club of the Year” in 2008) and will not require any additional dues or responsibilities. Instead, we’ll occasionally bring Medill graduates together to casually socialize, swap stories, ideas and business cards, and interact with sources who can give us some perspective on how to thrive professionally in the coming decade, recession be damned.
