Apply for a Medill Alumni Scholarship to receive free training through the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida, which offers workshops on a multitude of journalism topics both on-site and online.

We will award $10,000 in scholarships for our journalism alumni to participate in training from the Poynter Institute and its e-learning site, News University. Visit the Poynter website for a schedule of upcoming seminars and e-learning activities.

You qualify for these training scholarships if you completed the requirements for an undergraduate or graduate degree in journalism from Medill. Applications are considered on a rolling basis.

How to apply
  1. Complete the application. Tell us what training would help advance your career and professional development.  For examples and guidelines, visit poynter.org/training and note the onsite and online course lists.  Please specify if there is a particular course or courses you think would best fit your training needs.
  2. We will verify applicants' alumni status, and a faculty panel will review applications as they are received. We will forward a list of awardees and alternates to Poynter and inform awardees on an ongoing basis.
  3. Poynter will contact the awardees and assist in matching them with the training that best meets their needs, experience and schedules. If funds remain, Poynter will award scholarships to Medill alternates.

If you receive the scholarship and choose to attend an onsite workshop at Poynter, you will be responsible for travel and lodging costs. You will qualify for group hotel rates, typically less than $130 per night.
