Elisa Drake (MSJ94) worked for five years at Morris Visitor Publications. After writing a pair of travel books, Drake was recruited back to Morris in 2012. Morris’ publications are focused on tourism, sports and lifestyle. At Morris, she works for Where magazine, where she collaborates with the editor-in-chief in choosing and writing content and securing images.
Drake's two travel guides are “Day Trips from Chicago” and “Insiders’ Guide to Chicago,” both published by Globe Pequot Press.
Until June of 2014, Drake was also editor-in-chief of skirt! Chicago, dedicated to covering all interests of the modern woman. She selected all local content and profiles, coordinated photo shoots and managed freelancers. She also wrote and/or edited all copy.
Drake has also spent a number of years as a freelance writer covering a wide range of topics, including Chicago people, places and things to do; parenting and family activities; women’s health issues; eco-friendly businesses; and weddings.
“When I wanted to get a master’s degree at Medill, a top editor in New York told me it wasn’t necessary,” Drake says. “But for me, it was. I needed the targeted training and skills that Medill gave me, along with the confidence that I truly knew what I was doing. I feel like my Medill experience gave me the groundwork for my ability to become the content chameleon that I am—I can write about anything because I know how to piece together a story.”
