Scott Anderson

Assistant Professor, Managing Editor, Medill News Service and Medill Content Lab

Scott B. Anderson has more than 30 years of experience in the media business, half of that in online and interactive. He specializes in interactive publishing and also leads interactive strategy for Medill's National Security Journalism Initiative.

Prior to Medill, Anderson spent 10 years as the head of editorial at Chicago-based Tribune Interactive (TI), the umbrella organization for Tribune Company's award-winning national network of newspaper and broadcast station websites. Scott, the director of shared content, poked his nose into a lot of things at TI and strove to be one of the company's key trend spotters and advocates for innovation.

His staff's primary role was to communicate, create and package great online multimedia content that could be shared across the network and to help local online editors and their staffs work together. He also was an architect of the successful Newsroom Now project, which helped jumpstart production of more compelling online content by the company's print newsrooms, and was a major part of Tribune Today, a groundbreaking effort that greatly improved content sharing among Tribune's newspapers. He left Tribune in mid-2008.

In addition to his work at Medill, Anderson freelances and manages a content consultancy.

Earlier, Anderson spent 17 years at Tribune's South Florida Sun-Sentinel as an award-winning reporter and editor and founding executive producer of its interactive businesses. He previously worked as a reporter at The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass.

Anderson is a longtime active member of the American Society of News Editors, the Online News Association and Investigative Reporters and Editors.


Anderson is a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, an institution that provided students with little means an affordable education and a great leg up in their careers with its renowned cooperative education program, which involved alternating academic semesters with those of meaningful, full-time employment in their major.
