What is the Medill Fellowship Program?
The Medill Fellowship Program (MFP) consists of several stipends provided to deserving undergraduate and/or graduate level Medill students doing unpaid journalism related internships during summer 2012. We would like to thank our generous donors for providing us with the funds to support the Medill Fellowship Program.
The specific Fellowship opportunities included within the MFP are:
• The Christine Brennan Fellowship ($1000.00): The Brennan Fellowship, an initiative spearheaded by Medill Career Services and Medill alum Christine Brennan, provides a stipend to interns selected at non-paid journalism-related summer internships.
• The Dale F. Kasler BSJ ’80 Internship Fellowship ($1000.00): This fund will be dispersed as an annual grant to Medill students participating in an unpaid NEWSPAPER internship during their undergraduate or graduate tenure at Medill.
• The Rick Wamre Hyper-local Fellowship ($1250.00): To support a journalism student pursuing an unpaid internship at preferably a print or television/radio-based media operation with a strong hyper-local presence (i.e., a smaller market or highly targeted market in a larger city) that has a growing internet component, but is not solely an online entity.
What is the value of the Fellowship award and how many will be awarded?
• The Christine Brennan Fellowship: $1000.00 will be awarded to the student selected. For summer 2012, we will be providing this specific award to 2 students.
• The Dale F. Kasler BSJ ’80 Internship Fellowship: $1000.00 will be awarded to the student selected. For summer 2012, we will be providing this specific award to 1 student.
• The Rick Wamre Hyper-local Fellowship: $1250.00 will be awarded to each student selected. For summer 2012, we will be providing this specific award to 2 students.
Who is Eligible?
The Christine Brennan Fellowship:
• Medill freshman, sophomores, and juniors who will be returning to Medill for the fall 2012 quarter
• Students whose summer internships are unpaid
• Students who will not receive compensation from their internship employer, university departments, and/or other funding sources (with the exception of a travel and/or food stipend provided by your internship employer).
The Dale F. Kasler BSJ ’80 Internship Fellowship:
• All Medill undergraduate and graduate level Journalism students
• Students whose summer internships are unpaid AND at a newspaper
• Students who will not receive compensation from their internship employer, university departments, and/or other funding sources (with the exception of a travel and/or food stipend provided by your internship employer).
The Rick Wamre Hyper-local Fellowship:
• All Medill undergraduate and graduate level Journalism students
• Students whose summer internships are unpaid AND at preferably a print or television/radio-based media operation with a strong hyper-local presence (i.e., a smaller market or highly targeted market in a larger city) that has a growing internet component, but is not solely an online entity.
• Students who will not receive compensation from their internship employer, university departments, and/or other funding sources (with the exception of a travel and/or food stipend provided by your internship employer).
PLEASE NOTE: MSJ Global Residency students are NOT eligible for the Medill Fellowship Program.
Do I have to have an internship secured at the time of application?
YES! In order to be fully considered for any of the specific fellowship opportunities within the Medill Fellowship Program (MFP), you MUST have an unpaid internship secured at the time of application.
Will I receive academic credit if I am awarded one of the Medill Fellowships?
Students will NOT receive credit toward Medill requirements for their internship experience. However, all fellowship recipients will be required to enroll in JOUR 388 Internship course.
When is the application deadline?
May 20, 2012. Applications must be submitted electronically via MEDILLINK IN FULL by 11:59 pm on Sunday, May 20, 2012.
When will I know if I have been selected for the Medill Fellowship Program (MFP)?
All students will be notified of their acceptance status by email on or before June 1, 2012.
What are the criteria used for accepting students and awarding grants?
1. Quality and content of application materials and essays
2. Financial need – as rated by Financial Aid Office
3. Ability to secure an unpaid internship
4. Ability to meet the aforementioned eligibility requirements of the various Fellowships offered.
