Medill junior to appear on “Check, Please!”

Amber Gibson, a junior focusing on broadcast at Medill, recently reviewed Edzo’s Burger Shop for WTTW’s “Check, Please!” The show will air this Friday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m. with encore presentations on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 29 at 12 p.m. Gibson took a few moments to relay the details of her experience.

How did you get picked for the show?

I applied online. It was a long process. I applied back in March or April!

For someone who has never seen the show, can you basically explain the premise?
Three people suggest their favorite restaurant, and all three people independently go to each of the three restaurants within a one-week period. They then get together on the show to sip wine and discuss their experiences. It's a very casual environment. I'm glad that both of the guys I was on the show with liked Edzo's. I've seen some episodes get pretty confrontational!

Why did you decide to showcase Edzo’s?
I submitted Edzo's because it is my favorite restaurant here in Evanston. Edzo's is a budget-friendly place to eat, and Eddie himself is such a nice and culinarily talented guy.

How often do you eat there?
I probably eat at Edzo's about once a month. I would go more often, but every time I go, I have to get a Char Burger, fries and a milkshake, so it wouldn't be too healthy to go there every day. Plus, it can be hard to get in, especially with their epic lines on weekends. Those lines will probably get longer after the show, too!

What is it about Edzo’s that you like?
I love the food of course, but also the fun environment, from the great service to the colorful murals on the wall.

When did the show film and what was that like?
We filmed September 21. It was less than a couple hours. I met the two other guys at the studio, talked to Alpana [Singh], our host, briefly, and then we filmed. We weren't allowed to talk about the restaurants until the cameras were rolling because they wanted the experience to be as natural as possible.

I'm really interested in food journalism, so this was an amazing opportunity.
