As part of Cecilia Vaisman’s Audio Reporting class this quarter, MSJ students reported on CPS’s plan to close 54 public schools in Chicago.


Aired Friday, May 17, on WBEZ Chicago at 4:50 and 6:20 p.m.:

-Rebecca LaFlure reports on the uncertain future of the Lafayette Elementary School string orchestra, currently housed at Lafayette in Humboldt Park, one of the 54 schools slated for closure.

Aired Sunday, May 19, on Latino USA at 2 p.m.:
-Paige Sutherland and Tanya Basu report at Peabody Elementary on the West Side where parents and students hold on to hope their school will remain open after the School Board votes on May 22.

-Ananth Baliga and Lisa Carter report from North Lawndale where parents, teachers and students fear closing Pope Elementary will send kids from their home turf across rival gang lines putting them in danger.
