Medill was once again a big winner at the Chicago/Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy awards.
The Northwestern News Network (NNN) was honored in two categories. The group of students who create the Northwestern News Report for NNN were honored in the Newscast category and Omar Jimenez (BSJ15), who reports for NNN, won in the News: General Assignment category for his story “Cell Phone Videos and the Faces Behind the Camera.” Medill students were also nominated in other categories.
Assistant Professor Lawrence Stuelpnagel said this is the fifth consecutive year that Medill students have won in the Newscast category, and the 10th win since 2007 for the news and sports categories.
“This latest award, and the previous successes, reflect the quality of the instruction that our students receive and the dedication that they have to be among the very best in the industry,” Stuelpnagel said. “Week in and week out we produce news, sports, Spanish language news and political analysis that lays a solid foundation for great careers in the industry.”
Some of the students who were on the winning NNN team have graduated and are currently working in the broadcast field, at domestic outlets like NBC and Al Jazeera, and abroad in South Africa.
NNN is a student-run news network created by undergraduate journalism students. Stuelpnagel serves as their adviser. NNN covers university and city issues and produce shows on sports and politics. A Spanish-language broadcast, Noticiero Northwestern, was added in 2013.
