Photojournalism

Photojournalists are reporters who communicate through pictures, and students will learn to think visually in order to create compelling, storytelling images. Photojournalism has the power to reveal the human experience, and this in-depth course will give students an additional tool in their reporting skill set. Discussions of historical and contemporary photojournalism, as well as ethics in photojournalism, will accompany weekly assignments and critiques.

Students will also learn to edit pictures thoughtfully to enhance the power, nuance and clarity of the story. Medill cameras are provided for use in this class, and students will receive instruction on manual controls to attain a variety of photographic effects. Upon completion of this course, students will be comfortable approaching people and documenting a variety of news and feature stories.
