The Chicago Newsroom

As a Medill graduate student, you will have access to all of Chicago's distinctive assets to practice your journalism skills in the city's diverse, news-rich communities. You will spend your time working in the Chicago newsroom in the Loop – the hub of finance, commerce, culture and government.

You will develop a beat and produce a variety of stories on that topic for different media platforms. You will get the opportunity to take on roles of your choice to hone your skills further. Medill faculty will serve as your editors. Your stories and video will be published on a showcase website that will represent the best work done by you and your peers.

Your assignments will take you to many of Chicago's 77 neighborhoods – from Chinatown to Wicker Park, Bronzeville to Old Town, Wrigleyville to Hyde Park – communities that give this big city a personal feel. It's a great place to be a journalist.

"With the downtown newsroom, you are right in the heart of the city, ready to jet to a Chicago Board of Health meeting or a mayoral campaign event at any time. We don't do a lot of classroom learning. It's more about 'learning by doing.' As a credentialed Chicago reporter, you have access to things and people you would have never imagined."
