Degree Requirements Overview
Students are required to earn 45 units for the Bachelor of Science in Journalism (BSJ) degree.
The program consists of five separate components:
1. 11-12 journalism units
2. 14 distribution requirements in the following disciplines: history, literature, math/science, political science, economics, religion/philosophy and art/art history
3. 10-11 University-wide electives
4. Three units in a social science concentration and six units in a WCAS concentration
5. 11 units in global and diverse cultures (these units are not in addition to the above requirements, but rather are within the disttribution, elective and concentration categories above).
Of the 45 units required for the BSJ degree, at least 33 must be from outside Medill and no more than 12 can be Medill courses. If a student has earned more than 45 units, additional journalism courses may be taken. Exceptions to any degree requirements must be petitioned and approved by the Senior Director of Undergraduate Studies & Teaching Excellence. Petitions and the rules for filing them are distributed once per quarter by the Office of Student Life.

ii. No mandatory transfer
iii. No Ds or Fs in Medill classes (must retake until earn C-)
iv. No more than 1/5 of the total 45 courses may have below a C-
