Vice President of Marketing at Wealthfront

Why did you choose Medill?

Because of the focus on the full spectrum of marketing. The Integrated Marketing Communications program brought data analysis and storytelling together in a really compelling way.

What is your fondest memory of your time at Medill?

Too many to count, but probably the great friendships, forged during late night study sessions, that have lasted for more than a decade.

What was the greatest challenge you faced during your Medill career?

Definitely feeling like I was an outsider since my career path wasn't like most other students. Fortunately, that was only a short-term concern!

Why do you think Medill is unique?

No other program houses such innovative thinking across journalism, media and marketing, and when the disciplines interact, amazing things happen. Also, given today's political climate and the constant attack on the news media, no other place is better equipped to help get things back on track and spread the word.

What was your greatest achievement or best experience?

Again, way too many to list, but I remember we had a blast working on a project for John Deere. For our user research, we drove out close to Wisconsin and test drove small tractors. That was certainly a first for me! It was also an honor to be the student speaker at our graduation, especially since I felt like a bit of an outsider in the beginning.

How has your Medill training helped you in your career so far? Are there skills or lessons you learned at Medill that you still use today?

I think it helps me more than I realize. The skills you learn really become part of your everyday thinking. Specifically, I learned a lot about how to be a creative and provocative storyteller, and that's something I attribute back to IMC.

What advice do you have for someone who might be looking to pursue a degree in IMC?

Make sure it aligns with your passions. You should really enjoy what you do, so Medill is an amazing additive experience to help sharpen you skills and challenge conventional thinking. And if you do enroll, soak it all in. It's an amazing time, but it goes by quickly.
