John Greening

Associate Professor Emeritus

John M. Greening joined IMC as an associate professor in 2000 and has taught classes including Brand Communication Decisions, Brand Content in a Social World (co-taught with Bob Scarpelli) and Summer Immersion Quarter. Greening also serves as brand strategy advisor for any student requesting help in creating personal brands. Outside of Northwestern, John is committed to the development and execution of new businesses and is involved with start-ups in the restaurant, vitamin, job placement and addressable television.

Prior to joining Northwestern, John spent 27 years at DDB Chicago. In his time at DBB, he held many positions including Executive Vice President and Director of Client Services as well as the Worldwide Account Director for the Anheuser-Busch account in the U.S. and 22 other countries. During that time he led the team that produced popular Budweiser campaigns such as the “Frogs,” “Ants,” “Spuds MacKenzie,” “The I love you, man,” “Yes, I am” and “Whassup.” These efforts helped Anheuser-Busch increase its share of sales as well as share of the alcoholic beverage margin pool for seven consecutive years.

John speaks frequently to industry as well as student groups. He was named Teacher of the year in 2009. He is often quoted in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal and has made numerous appearances on the Today show as well as Chicago public Television. In addition, John participates in several non-profit boards in the Chicago focusing on homeless, the poor and education.
