Medill in San Francisco

At the intersection of media and technology lies the Bay Area Immersion Experience, a groundbreaking, quarter-long program that gives you the opportunity to learn from and contribute to San Francisco's booming entrepreneurial scene.

Medill's priority is always the health and safety of our students so we may make adjustments to planned travel based on guidance from Northwestern's Office of Global Safety and Security.

Combine your passions

What's your story? If it involves a mix of journalism, engineering, design and innovation, you'll get the chance to put them together and take the next step in your career, all while working with some of the Bay Area's brightest minds.

The program is offered in winter quarter with Medill and McCormick School of Engineering Segal Design Institute students.

Your cohort will be based at the state-of-the-art Northwestern education space in downtown San Francisco, where you'll take advantage of the city's tech, media and start-up culture through hands-on work and onsite visits.

Chart your course

  • Classes focus on experiential learning areas, such as design innovation, digital communication and the intersection of technology and culture.
  • Co-curricular activities coordinated by faculty and staff include field trips to local companies, workshops and cultural programming intended to give students more exposure to San Francisco.

I discovered a passion for design I didn’t know I had. I might never have discovered this part of myself had I not signed up for the program.
