Ellen Soeteber

Ellen Soeteber (BSJ72) is a member of the Medill Hall of Achievement.

Soeteber was the sixth editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. She served in that position, overseeing all news and editorial operations, from January 2001 through November 2005.

Soeteber grew up in East St. Louis, Ill. Her professional career began at two now-defunct afternoon newspapers, the Chicago Daily News and Chicago Today. In 1974, Soeteber joined the Chicago Tribune, where her jobs included reporter, copy editor, weekend editor, night city editor, associate metro editor, and TV/media editor.

Soeteber was chair of the advisory board for the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships and a member of the selection committee for the Knight-Wallace Fellows at Michigan. She participated in the Knight-Wallace Fellowship at Michigan, then called the Michigan Journalism Fellowship, in 1986-1987. She also participated in 1997 in the Northwestern University/Kellogg School of Management Advanced Executive Program at the Media Management Center at Northwestern.

Soeteber died June 2016.
