Sam H. Saran

Sam H. Saran (BSJ50, MSJ50) is a member of the inaugural class of the Medill Hall of Achievement of 1997.

Saran is the former assistant to the chairman and director of corporate communications at the Inland Steel Company.

He joined Inland as director of corporate communications in June 1968 after an 18-year career in broadcast journalism and university communications. His Inland responsibilities included direct staff assistance to the chairman and chief executive officer, news media contacts, external publications, corporate-wide employee publications, and audio-visual communications. He retired in 1990.

Saran began his career with the NBC radio-television news department in Chicago and remained until his appointment in September 1963 as director of public relations at Northwestern. While working with WMAQ and WNBQ-TV, Saran fulfilled assignments as a news writer, editor, reporter, newscaster, producer of news documentaries and financial news editor-commentator for a nightly radio stock market and business report and a weekly television series, "Invest in America." He also served as reporter-at-large for the WMAQ series, "Night Desk," and on numerous NBC network news assignments including the national political conventions of 1956 and 1960.
