Mary Pat Flaherty (BSJ77) had an internship position with The Pittsburgh Press in 1975, while she was still at Medill. Upon her graduation she transitioned to reporter, and later editor, at the paper. In 1986, Flaherty and Schneider shared the Pulitzer Prize for specialized reporting.

In 1993 Flaherty left The Pittsburgh Press for a position at The Washington Post, working as an editor and reporter of investigative journalism.
