Arturo Fernandez brings over 18 years of experience in visual journalism and media leadership to his role as an adjunct lecturer.
He began his career as a staff photographer at The Ottawa Daily Times and The Morning Call before transitioning to leadership roles at The Des Moines Register, Rockford Register Star, and most recently, as the senior assistant managing editor for visuals & graphics at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. During his tenure, his visuals team played a pivotal role in producing impactful content that contributed to the Post-Gazette being named Best Newspaper in its category for three consecutive years. His team also contributed to Pulitzer-winning coverage and multiple regional Emmy Awards, among other accolades.
Fernandez has earned multiple Keystone Media Awards and Society of Professional Journalists honors for his photography, including the prestigious Peter Lisagor Award for Best News Photo.
Throughout his career, Fernandez has mentored a diverse range of journalists and visual storytellers, helping them develop the skills necessary for impactful, high-quality reporting. A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, he brings a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom, inspiring students to excel in journalism and navigate the evolving media landscape.
