Thomas H. Hayden
Lecturer and Director of IMC Certificate Program
Tom Hayden joined the full-time IMC faculty in 2006, following a 30-year career in marketing and advertising, and eight years as an adjunct.
Currently, Hayden teaches IMC Law, Policy and Ethics and Data Governance in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. He also serves as program director and academic advisor to students in the IMC Undergraduate Certificate program, and is chairman of Medill’s Academic Standards Committee.
After receiving his law degree and passing the bar exam in 1977, Hayden began his career on the corporate side at The Leo Burnett Company. He then spent most of the 80s at DDB Needham (now DDB), before joining Bozell Worldwide in 1989. He spent the next 14 years as president of Bozell’s Chicago operations, while also serving as a member of the Bozell Worldwide board of directors. Hayden left Bozell in 2003 following its acquisition by the Interpublic Group and spent the following three years as both president and chief strategy officer of GreenHouse, an independent communications company based in Chicago.
Hayden currently is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Harris Associates Investment Trust, sponsor of the Oakmark family of mutual funds. He is also a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and The Academy of Legal Studies in Business.
Hayden lives in Michiana Shores, Indiana, with his wife, Louise. Son Thomas is an attorney in Chicago. Son Alec, a graduate of Northwestern, has followed his dream and is associate head swimming coach at the University of Missouri. Daughter Tess completed a master's degree in geology and environmental sciences at Alaska Pacific University and works for the Alaska Department of Natural Resources in Anchorage.
When not babysitting grandchildren, Hayden and Louise breed and race thoroughbred horses, ski the Canadian Rockies and spend the occasional summer day with family and dogs on their boat in Lake Michigan.
