Feature and Magazine Writing

Building from a base of strong reporting, students will learn narrative interviewing techniques, in-depth reporting and story development tactics for producing magazine-styled feature stories. Culminating with a lengthy story, students will learn how to craft beautifully reported and written pieces, understand the basics of tone, voice and narrative structure as well as how to get such stories pitched and published. The course emphasizes in-depth storytelling skills and is appropriate for students who are pursuing magazine, news reporting, documentary film, investigative, and interactive skills.

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with digital tools that will become the frameworks with which they can approach multi-platform storytelling, emphasizing the use of structured data and the visualization of data. Students will learn how to report and produce engaging interactive graphics. The focus will be on immersive visual storytelling for the web and mobile devices.
