News Reporting: Magazine

This magazine writing class is a hands-on introduction to the core competencies of magazine writing, basic editing and story packaging/producing for short-form works. This course will introduce you to the basics of “magazine think,” the process by which magazine writers and editors pitch, assign, write, edit and eventually publish magazine journalism in a host of formats for publications in a print/digital/social world.

Throughout the quarter, we will focus on the building blocks of magazines—audience, voice, story framing, magazine architecture, editorial judgment, narrative structure, curation and aggregation, and all-important short-form story treatments to create magazine-style pieces, both in print and multimedia, for publication. Ultimately, the course arms students with the skills necessarily to create multi-platform, magazine-style stories throughout the quarter for possible publication on the Medill Reports website.
