Medill College Journalism Initiative

Now more than ever, student journalism in some places is the only local journalism.

To support this vital effort, Medill has launched the Medill College Journalism Initiative. This outreach program is designed to help student journalists come up to speed quickly on the basics of news reporting, opinion writing and journalism ethics.

The program is for students at colleges or universities that have student-run media but no journalism courses.

The program consists of several online modules created by Medill’s faculty that cover the basics, from finding sources and writing stories, to ethics.

Once a school’s student journalists have watched all the modules, a Medill faculty member will visit, either in person or virtually, to follow up with students for Q&A, discussions and hands-on exercises.

Several colleges and universities have taken advantage of the initiative so far. Wellesley College, the first school to use the program, has done three different iterations of it.
