Hamm, Hanford judged Scripps Howard Awards

Two Medill faculty members judged the annual Scripps Howard Awards.

Lecturer Desi Hanford judged the William Brewster Styles Award for Business/Economics Reporting and Dean Bradley Hamm lead a team of judges to review the entries for the Roy W. Howard Award for Public Service. More than 50 journalism leaders and educators were on site Thursday, February 26 and Friday, February 27 at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., to judge 17 categories of entries over a two-day period.

“The entries are just extraordinary,” Hamm said.

Administered by the Scripps Howard Foundation, the awards are some of the most comprehensive in the industry, Hamm said. In the public service category major daily newspapers can compete with broadcast and cable news outlets and web-only operations.

Winners will receive a total of $180,000 in prize money and trophies at a banquet in Denver on Thursday, May 21.
