Medill convocation celebrations for 2021
School to celebrate graduates both virtually and in person per state health guidelines
EVANSTON, ILL. -- Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications looks forward to celebrating its graduates this year. More information about the activities for each cohort is below. Please pay particular attention to the graduation years for each event.
Northwestern University Commencement for the Class of 2021
Monday, June 14, 2021 at 11 a.m.
Virtual
- For all December 2020, March 2021, June 2021 and September 2021 graduates
- No tickets are required
Commencement will include remarks from student speakers, President Morton Schapiro and keynote speaker Northwestern alumna Gwynne Shotwell, president and COO of SpaceX . This event is for the entire University—it is not Medill-specific and students’ names will not be called. Northwestern University Graduation Celebration for the Class of 2020
Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 9 a.m.
In-person at Ryan Field
- For all December 2019, March 2020, June 2020 and September 2020 graduates
- Live stream will be available
- Students must register by Sunday, May 16 to attend with up to four guests
The Class of 2020 will be recognized at a unique graduation celebration at Ryan Field. All 2020 graduates are invited to attend and can bring four pre-ticketed guests. This ceremony will include the opportunity to walk across the stage and have your name announced. This will also be livestreamed for any friends and family viewing remotely.

Medill 2021 Journalism Convocation
Monday, June 14, 2021 at 2 p.m.
In-person at Ryan Fieldhouse
- For all December 2020, March 2021, June 2021 and September 2021 Journalism graduates
- Live stream will be available
- Students must register by Sunday, May 16 to attend with up to four guests
Medill’s June Convocation at Ryan Fieldhouse will include remarks from Dean Charles Whitaker and guest speaker and alum George R. R. Martin (BSJ70, MSJ71). Special guest speakers Omar Jimenez (BSJ15) and Andrea Valdez (MSJ06) will also pre-record video messages for our graduates; these messages will be posted online for graduates to watch before or after the Medill Convocation.
All undergraduate (BSJ) and graduate (MSJ) journalism students who are graduating are welcome to attend and can bring four pre-ticketed guests. This ceremony will include the opportunity for students to walk across the stage and have their names announced. This will also be livestreamed for any friends and family viewing remotely.

Medill 2021 IMC Convocation
Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 10 a.m.

- For all 2020 and 2021 IMC graduates

- Ticketing information to be shared in late September 2021 via email
December IMC Convocation will include remarks from Dean Charles Whitaker and a guest speaker to be determined. All IMC students who are graduating are welcome. Guest capacity will be determined in fall 2021 based on health guidelines in place at the time. This ceremony will include the opportunity for students to walk across the stage and have their names announced. This will also be livestreamed for any friends and family viewing remotely.
