Student Media and Organizations

Getting involved in student media and journalism organizations at Northwestern allows you to practice your skills while building community with fellow students and developing ties to the professional world. These groups are open to all interested students.

From your first quarter on campus, you have the chance to get involved with a wide variety of award-winning student media and professional organizations. These organizations are student-led and publications run independently of Medill.

Al Bayan: Al Bayan is a magazine by Muslim students at Northwestern University. It seeks to cover the American Muslim experience. Students can build a portfolio of clips while covering important issues.
Asian American Student Journalists: AASJ is the student affiliate of the Asian American Journalists Association. The Northwestern chapter hosts skills development sessions and networking events and attends the national AAJA convention, which builds connections between students and professional journalists.
Association for Women in Sports Media: The Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM) Northwestern Chapter was established in 2015. AWSM members are students who want to learn about and network within the sports media industry.
BlackBoard: BlackBoard, Northwestern University’s black student magazine, is a satellite of Northwestern’s National Association of Black Journalists chapter. BlackBoard aims to provide the campus and surrounding areas with a unique perspective of the black community.
The Blackout: The Blackout is Northwestern’s Late Night Comedy Show. Once a quarter, a crew of more than 100 students works with talent in the Northwestern community to create a live variety show in the style of traditional late night television.
The Daily Northwestern: Founded in 1881, The Daily Northwestern is a student newspaper that publishes five days a week, Monday through Friday, during regular academic weeks. It has won dozens of regional and national awards, and many top alumni launched their journalism careers at The Daily.
In Our Nature: The online publication In Our Nature aims to engage and entertain readers with all aspects of the environment, nature and sustainability. Its goal is to make environmental topics more accessible to the general public.
Inside NU: Inside NU is SB Nation's Northwestern site that provides coverage and analysis of Northwestern sports. Students can build a portfolio while covering Big Ten athletics.
National Association of Black Journalists: NABJ-NU is the student chapter of the professional National Association of Black Journalists organization. It serves as a resource and outlet for graduate and undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in mass communications and journalism. The Northwestern chapter hosts skills development sessions and networking events and attends the national NABJ convention, which builds connections between students and professional journalists.
National Association of Hispanic Journalists: NAHJNU is the Northwestern student chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. NAHJ was founded to support, connect and recognize Hispanic and Latino journalists across the globe. The Northwestern chapter connects members to leaders in the industry, helps them prepare for internships and jobs, hosts speakers, coordinates cultural events and provides a supportive network.
National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association: Founded in 2011, the Northwestern University Chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association provides a forum for students at Northwestern to network with their future peers in the communication field and foster fair and accurate coverage of LGBTQ issues. Additionally, some students attend the annual NLGJA national conference.
North by Northwestern: Founded in 2006, North by Northwestern magazine is printed three times a year in line with Northwestern University's academic quarters. Its website is updated throughout the year with campus news, lifestyle, entertainment and sports stories, as well as photos and videos, all contributed by students under the guidance of student editorial staff.
Northwestern Business Review: Northwestern Business Review is a business and technology publication produced by Northwestern students, who can contribute to the publication to develop a portfolio of work.
The Northwestern Flipside: The Northwestern Flipside is a satirical publication founded in 2008. The group publishes articles and headlines online each day, with bi-weekly print issues and occasional video, radio, and magazine content.
Northwestern News Network: Northwestern News Network (NNN) is the student-run news channel at Northwestern. The shows are created by students, for students. The network has won many accolades, including national Emmys and Best All-Around News Show from the Society of Professional Journalists. Student can get experience in all aspects of TV news production.
Northwestern University Asian Magazine: Through Northwestern University's Asian and Asian-American interest magazine, students can build a portfolio of clips while covering issues important to them.
The Northwestern Undergraduate Research Journal: The Northwestern Undergraduate Research Journal is an annual student-produced journal that showcases research done by Northwestern undergraduates from across all academic fields.
Politics and Policy: Politics and Policy publishes non-partisan analysis of current events--local, national and international. It layers the opinions and leverages the minds of many to produce objective analysis.
Queer Reader: The Queer Reader is Northwestern’s queer feminist publication. The magazine’s main priority is to create visibility for queer, feminist and person of color voices on campus, while also seeking to critique the institutions we live within and near.
Scene + Heard: Scene + Heard is Northwestern’s first dedicated culture and arts publication. Founded in 2014, it has since gone on to publish many online culture guides and thousands of articles, videos, picture essays and more.
Sherman Ave: Sherman Ave publishes topical comedic humor.
SPJ Northwestern Chapter: The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. The Northwestern chapter of SPJ regularly sends students to the SPJ Regional Conference.
Spoon University: Founded at Northwestern, Spoon University has chapters at hundreds of colleges where students can create content about food while building a portfolio of work. The Northwestern chapter website focuses on cooking and dining in Evanston.
Stitch: Stitch is a fashion magazine that offers Northwestern students the chance to creatively cover fashion and style using multimedia.
UNPLUGG’D (out of the Garage): UNPLUGG’D is a multimedia startup that is part of The Garage at Northwestern. It is dedicated to strengthening the voice of young adults through storytelling, mostly in the culture genre.
WNUR: WNUR is a student-run, noncommercial, listener-supported radio station broadcasting on 89.3 FM. The WNUR studios are located in the Barbara and Garry Marshall Studio Wing of Louis Hall on the Northwestern campus. It can be heard by nearly three million listeners throughout the Chicagoland area.
