Business Insight Analyst, Policy and Risk at TikTok
Akash Pathak

Tell us about your career path. How did you get where you are today?

I began my career in journalism and communication, contributing to various media outlets including newspapers, radio, and TV stations. Graduating amid COVID in 2020, I opted to take a gap year to pivot towards analytics and product, prompting me to take a gap year to take a leap into analytics and product management within the tech sector. I joined Medill in 2021 and focused on analytics and branding, which propelled me into my current role as a business analyst at TikTok.

What are your main responsibilities in your current role?

In my role, I focus on analytics within global advertising policy and risk at TikTok. I collaborate with cross-functional teams—such as operations, policy, and product—to craft strategic roadmaps and monitor key risk indicators. This collaborative effort is dedicated to designing processes, developing policies, and implementing product solutions that boost operational efficiency, ensure compliance, and enhance the overall advertiser experience.

How did the Medill Integrated Marketing Communications Full Time program prepare you for your career?

Medill was instrumental in preparing me for my current role. The program sharpened my skills in project management, market research, and data analysis. It also deepened my abilities in cross-functional collaboration.

What is a class or experience that stick out in your mind and why?

A standout experience during my time at Medill was participating in the San Francisco program, where I collaborated on reimagining the healthcare space. This project involved research, synthesis, ideation, prototyping, and developing a go-to-market strategy. The insights and methodologies I gained from this experience have shaped my strategic thinking and approach in my current role.

How has Medill Career Services helped you?

Neil Golden has provided invaluable guidance in tailoring my resume and honing my interview skills.

How can your industry be more inclusive and representative of society?

One of the key challenges for international students to work in the U.S. is to obtain company sponsorship to secure employment. The industry can foster greater inclusivity by embracing diverse talents, which not only lays the groundwork for success but also promotes cultural exchanges and diverse perspectives.

What advice would you give to someone considering the Medill Integrated Marketing Communications Full Time program?

My advice is to fully engage with the diverse opportunities the program offers. Explore different courses and collaborate with different peers on each project. Talk to the professors as they have extensive industry backgrounds.
